The surface of aluminium can be smoothed very easily and buffed to give a deep shine.

Allow your engine to cool down before working under the bonnet. Using a suitable Torx bit, remove the black plastic cover which sits between the two head covers. Under the cover you will see the dual coils...
Using the same Torx bit you should now remove the 16 screws which hold the two head covers in place. The front cover may now be removed.
Before removing the rear cover from the engine you should disconnect the crankcase oil breather pipe from the righthand corner of the head cover. The inlet manifold pressure pipe must also be disconnected from the head cover/throttle body.

With both covers now removed from the engine bay, you should place them on a flat work surface. Take care not to damage the oil seal on the underneath of each head cover, as if this seal is ripped you will have to re-seal the head cover.
Most VTS head covers come as standard with a layer of silver paint and lacquer. Many engines also seem to be released to the customer with a thick wax protective layer remaining. This can be quite stubbarn to remove.

You must now remove the paint from the head covers and flatten the surface. There are a number of ways of doing this depending on what tools you have available to you. Probably the easiest universal method it to use an electric sander.
Starting with a fairly rough grade of wet and dry paper (80 Grade) the surface of both head covers should be worked over until the dull aluminium surface can be seen all over.

The head covers should next be re-worked using 400 Grade wet and dry paper and when a consistent surface is achieved, the process should be repeated using 1000 Grade wet and dry paper.
At this point a very smooth surface should have been created. Lots of pressure should be used in order to get a truly smooth finish. The more preparation work put into this job, the better the end result will be.

When you are happy with the quality of the surface it is time to start the polishing stage. I have tried many different types of metal polishes and have found the most efficient polish for this job to be "Autosol". This is available from most general motor accessory outlets.
Plenty of polish should be smeared across the surface of the head covers. The electric sander should now be used to work the metal polish into the head covers, using a soft cloth in place of sand paper!
